Design Notes
Optics
Four designs share one parameter envelope: sphere, toric, multifocal, and toric multifocal, each lathe-cut to order rather than held in stock.
Stabilization
Dual Elliptical Stabilization, a thin ballast that sets orientation and rotational stability on the toric and the toric multifocal.
Add
Adaptive Tri-Zone Technology, a front-surface asphere carrying the most plus power centrally and progressing to more minus toward the periphery.
Geometry
Central near zone ordered from 1.8 to 3.0 mm in 0.1 mm steps. Center thickness is published by power class rather than at the usual -3.00D reference: 0.10 mm for a low minus lens, up to 0.50 mm for a plus lens.
Base curve
6.5 to 9.7 mm in 0.1 mm steps.
Diameter
10.0 to 16.0 mm in 0.1 mm steps.
Material
Three are orderable, all non-ionic. Hioxifilcon B (49% water, Dk 15) and hioxifilcon D (54% water, Dk 21) are hydrogels, each a copolymer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and glycerol methacrylate. Samfilcon B (41% water, Dk 126) is a silicone hydrogel, a copolymer of siloxane methacrylate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The figures on this card are hioxifilcon D's.
Handling tint
Blue. Hioxifilcon B and hioxifilcon D also come clear; samfilcon B is supplied tinted only.
Availability
Made to order, with most lenses delivered in 5 to 7 business days. The 120-day EZ-Exchange program remakes a lens to new parameters at no charge.
Note
Cleared labeling is narrower than the ordering range. The package insert (Rev. 2024-07) lists spherical powers of +20.00D to -20.00D and add powers of +1.00D to +4.00D, against the +/-30.00D and +0.50D to +3.00D in the brochure, the abbreviated fitting guide, and the product page.
Initial Fitting Guide
Method
Empirical. Measure horizontal visible iris diameter (HVID), keratometry, and refraction; no diagnostic lens set is needed.
Step 1
Pick lens diameter from HVID, then base curve from average K. HVID of 11.0 mm or less takes a 13.5 mm or smaller lens, 11.0 to 12.5 mm takes 14.0 or 14.5 mm, and 12.5 mm or more takes 15.0 mm or larger.
| Lens diameter | Average K | Base curve |
|---|---|---|
| 13.5 mm and smaller | 50 to 49 | 7.7 mm |
| 13.5 mm and smaller | 48 to 45 | 8.0 mm |
| 13.5 mm and smaller | 44 to 41 | 8.3 mm |
| 13.5 mm and smaller | 40 to 38 | 8.6 mm |
| 14.0 and 14.5 mm | 50 | 8.0 mm |
| 14.0 and 14.5 mm | 49 to 46 | 8.3 mm |
| 14.0 and 14.5 mm | 45 to 42 | 8.6 mm |
| 14.0 and 14.5 mm | 41 to 38 | 8.9 mm |
| 15.0 mm and larger | 50 to 47 | 8.6 mm |
| 15.0 mm and larger | 46 to 43 | 8.9 mm |
| 15.0 mm and larger | 42 to 39 | 9.2 mm |
| 15.0 mm and larger | 38 | 9.5 mm |
Step 2
Set distance power. Vertex the spectacle prescription to the corneal plane whenever the refraction is greater than +4.00 D or less than -4.00 D, and confirm axis orientation on the eye before ordering a toric. Single vision lenses can be ordered at this point; multifocals continue to Step 3.
Step 3
Set add power from the distance power.
- Plano or minus: order the refractive add.
- +0.25 D or greater: order the refractive add less 0.25 D.
- Greater than +2.00 D with a refractive add above +2.25 D: order the refractive add less 0.50 D.
Step 4
Set the near zone diameter from pupil size.
- A standard central add zone of 2.4 mm suits most patients.
- Pupil smaller than 3.0 mm: order a 1.8 to 2.3 mm near zone.
- Pupil larger than 4.0 mm: order a 2.5 to 3.0 mm near zone.
- Equal pupils: start with the same near zone diameter in both eyes.
Toric axis check
Let the lens settle at least 10 minutes, then read the guide marks against the 0° to 180° meridian. Stable clockwise rotation is added to the refractive cylinder axis, stable counterclockwise rotation is subtracted. Rotational rocking should stay under 5°.
Blurry distance
Reduce the add zone diameter.
Blurry near
Over-refract for the least plus that gives acceptable near vision and add that to the add power. The add zone diameter can also be increased.
Dominant eye
Setting the dominant eye's add zone 0.1 mm smaller than the non-dominant eye is common, even with pupils of equal size.
