Geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration
2 mg (0.1 mL of 20 mg/mL) intravitreally into each affected eye once monthly
Slows lesion growth without restoring acuity, and raises the risk of converting to neovascular AMD
Contraindications
Ocular or periocular infections. Active intraocular inflammation.
Available Forms
Single-dose glass vial of 20 mg/mL solution, delivering 2 mg in 0.1 mL.
Mechanism of Action
Avacincaptad pegol is an RNA aptamer, a PEGylated oligonucleotide that binds to and inhibits complement protein C5. By inhibiting C5, avacincaptad pegol may prevent its cleavage to C5a and C5b thus decreasing membrane attack complex (MAC) formation.
Warnings & Precautions
Endophthalmitis and retinal detachment may follow intravitreal injection. Treatment increases the risk of neovascular AMD in the treated eye. Increases in intraocular pressure have been seen after injection.
Common Side Effects
The most common adverse reactions (incidence ≥ 5%) were conjunctival hemorrhage, increased IOP, blurred vision, neovascular age-related macular degeneration, punctate keratitis, and eye pain.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; use may be considered after weighing risks and benefits.
Lactation: No data on presence in human milk or effects on the breastfed infant.
Pediatric Use
Safety and effectiveness of IZERVAY in pediatric patients have not been established.
