Trachoma and inclusion conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis

Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated in persons who have shown hypersensitivity to any of the tetracyclines or to any of the components of the product formulation.

Minocycline hydrochloride capsules and tablets, 50 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg.
Mechanism of Action
The tetracyclines are primarily bacteriostatic and are thought to exert their antimicrobial effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis. The tetracyclines, including minocycline, have a similar antimicrobial spectrum of activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Cross-resistance of these organisms to tetracycline is common.
Warnings & Precautions
Tetracyclines can cause permanent discoloration of the teeth and enamel hypoplasia if used during tooth development, from the second trimester through age 8.
Photosensitivity, presenting as an exaggerated sunburn, can occur; advise sun avoidance.
Intracranial hypertension has been reported and can persist after stopping; it presents with headache, papilloedema and visual loss, and needs prompt recognition.
Vestibular disturbance, dizziness and tinnitus are common.
Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) and autoimmune syndromes have been reported.
Common Side Effects
Due to oral minocycline's virtually complete absorption, side effects to the lower bowel, particularly diarrhea, have been infrequent. The following adverse reactions have been observed in patients receiving tetracyclines: Body as a whole: Fever and discoloration of secretions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Tetracyclines can cause fetal harm; they affect long-bone growth and cause permanent tooth discoloration when used after the first trimester.
Lactation: Tetracyclines are present in human milk; the potential for tooth discoloration and effects on bone growth argues against use.
Pediatric Use
Minocycline is not recommended for the use in children below 8 years of age unless the expected benefits of therapy outweigh the risks (see WARNINGS ).
