Warnings & Precautions

Suicidal behaviour and ideation have been reported with antiepileptic drugs; monitor for the emergence or worsening of depression or unusual changes in mood.
Somnolence, dizziness and ataxia are common and may impair driving; effects are additive with other CNS depressants.
Respiratory depression can occur when combined with opioids or in pre-existing respiratory impairment.
Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) and anaphylaxis have been reported.
Do not discontinue abruptly; withdraw over at least one week.

Common Side Effects

The most common adverse reactions associated with the use of Gabapentin in adults, not seen at an equivalent frequency among placebo-treated patients, were dizziness, somnolence, and peripheral edema.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; gabapentin caused developmental toxicity in animals at clinically relevant exposures.

Lactation: Gabapentin is present in human milk; consider the mother's clinical need alongside any potential effect on the infant.

Pediatric Use

Safety and effectiveness of gabapentin in the management of postherpetic neuralgia in pediatric patients have not been established. Safety and effectiveness as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in pediatric patients below the age of 3 years has not been established.
